After the storms

The aftermath of two recent storms; storm Ciara and storm Dennis -  and with groundwater levels being above normal for this time of year - the meadows once again flooded due to the quality of rainfall in the recent weeks.

The Mill Brook, a small offshoot of the River Wey as it enters the meadows, became as big as the main river itself. However only being a brook consequently overflowed it's banks; first flooding the western end of the meadows and then all the meadows until eventually returning back some of the water back to the River Wey. The meadow itself created a third current into the water running off the fields, creating a confluence of three water sources but reducing the flow in the river as the meadow acted as a short term reservoir.

Further along, although the river alongside Gostrey meadow rose considerably, it did not overflow it’s flood banks. The meadows provide a critical floodplain to protect the surrounding houses and businesses.

On 17th February 2020 Allan Arthurs of Media Techniche Ltd. captured some fantastic footage of the meadow for us. An aerial video of the Bishops Meadow Trust shows how the meadows protect centre Farnham from further flooding downstream. This was the aftermath of two back to back storms - storm Ciara and storm Dennis.
